Spring Birding 2025 Contest

Many birds are migrating through. How many species can our Nature Friend subscriber family spy? Let’s have some birding fun and find out.

We are going to split into two teams. We want to see if Team Hawk or Team Owl can spy the most. You will be part of a team, but you won’t know which team until the results are published. So, when you and your cousins go birding together, each of you recording your observations, you do not know if your entries will be on the same team or opposite teams. So get together and have fun.

Birding Contest Rules

  • Be an active subscriber to Nature Friend. Each subscription is good for one list, and all members of the family/household may participate.
  • Record the species of birds you see (or know by sound) for a period of three days. You may choose your three-day period anytime, but it must end no later than May 31, 2025.
  • Identify your list by including the start and end dates of the effort, the name of each who contributed to the list, your mailing address, and your subscriber number.
  • Organize your list before submitting. Record bird’s last name, first name. Alphabetical order is appreciated.
  • Submit list to us no later than immediately after deadline. We hope to have results in the August issue, which we compile in June, but being able to do so will require us to get an early start. Otherwise, the results will be published in September.
  • When possible, attach an Excel (.xlsx) file. Second choice is a typed list. Third choice is neatly printed. We reserve the right to discard hard-to-read submissions.

We will split the submissions, assigning half to Team Hawk, and half to Team Owl. We will then combine lists from the various contributors into a Master List for each team, and publish the results. We also plan to publish the name of each person who contributed to the list.

So let’s get started and see how many birds we can find.

Oh yes. If you find an extra rare bird, please jot a note about the events surrounding its discovery—anything that verifies the ID as accurate.

Fun stories and photos about your birding are invited but are not required.
