Nature Nugget Contest Honorable Mention
My aunt was at the lake, relaxing on the shore, when she noticed a heron creeping stealthily up a steep bank toward the road, step…by…step… Out of curiosity, she watched as it prowled along like a cat after its prey. Suddenly it grabbed a mouse by the tail, flipped it up into the air, and caught it at the belly.
It marched proudly back down to the lake and swished the mouse around in the water. Then quickly Mr. Heron flung the mouse up into the air again and swallowed it whole! Maybe wet mice slide down long heron throats more easily than dry mice.
Calmly Mr. Heron sat there looking as if nothing had happened. But I wondered what it felt like for Mr. Heron to have a live mouse kicking in his stomach!
