- August 5, the upper stage of SpaceX Falcon 9 will strike the Moon at about 06:30 UTC near the Einstein crater. Likely we won’t see it happen.
- Bats are beginning to migrate south. Use binoculars to look for them high in the sky before dark.
- Hunt for leatherback mushrooms. Their fish-like smell may give away their presence before you spot them.
- The Milky Way Galaxy is positioned nicely in the evening for astronomers to enjoy the sky rich with targets to observe.
- Mid-August is a fine time to clean out birdhouses.
- Take the challenge and hunt for singing katydids. They can be a lot harder to find than you think they should be.
- Watch for dragonflies dipping into water as they lay eggs in the water.
- Copperheads are giving birth to young.
- Children in Iceland are rescuing young puffins (pufflings) at night that are attracted into town by the lights. They will release them at the coast in the morning.
