Snow in February

Morgan Brown, Port Haywood, VA

Long ago…
Little children played,
In snow so small,
Not peril, but chills,
Drove inside young
and old.
They yearn for some warmth,
From the fierce fireside,
And they flurry to find,
Some swishing coco on
The stove.
Right now…
We study the sparkling, splendid snow.
So intricate and fine,
So impressive and flashy,
We know who manufactured,
Every tiny piece,
So stunning, but small,
They fall forevermore

Out in the Patch

Anna Martin, Charles City, IA

“Blueberries!” we cheer, we pick up our gear.
With a skip and a hop we go past the shop,
For the blueberry season is here.

How many we eat of those sweet blue treats!
Lots of pints are soon filled; and customers milled
At the stand to buy produce farm sweets.

But then come the days when the sun’s hot blaze
Will bring out the sweat, and cause us to fret
Of the end that seems off a long ways.

“Blueberries,” we sigh. And that’s when we try
Wormy berries to fling; silly songs to sing;
For the level of boredom is high.

“Bueberries,” we moan. “More berries,” we groan.
Then we talk about birds, and talk about words,
And we list to the honeybee’s drone.

We talk about snakes, toads, rivers, and lakes;
Dogs, horses, and Bovva, the great Hupsaschrovva,
And of many new roads one could take.

We discuss different owls, and coyote howls,
And weekends, and nights of blinkers and lights,
And cats, and chickens, and cows.

Then berries are done and we all go home.
And everyone’s glad for the days we’ve had
Full of berries and boredom- ‘Twas fun!

Owls

Morgan Brown, Port Haywood, VA

Owls, amazing hunters.
Owls, fearless fliers.
Owls, feathered with care.
Owls, with strong, sturdy beaks.
Owls, with staring, glowing eyes.
Owls, with wise, calm faces
Owls, with claws like thunder, flashing through the sky.
Owls, with wings, silent as the snowy night.
Owls, with tails as elegant as the rolling hills.
Owls, with hoots that glorify Him,
He who formed all things.
He, who has all omniscience and power.
Only He, Only He is worthy.
