One warm summer evening in September, my family was outside eating my little brother’s birthday cake. Suddenly my mother shaded her eyes and exclaimed, “What is that?”
We all looked and then stared. Right across the road at our rows of hay bales, was a bear! We don’t see bears very often in our county. My older brother said that if the bear came any closer, he would grab the birthday cake and run inside because he wanted to have some too. Then suddenly, it was gone.
Our neighbors went out to look for it. All of a sudden, there it was, racing across the road toward another neighbor’s house. My mother and my older brother went in our car to warn our neighbor that it was coming toward their house because we heard their children playing outside. Later our neighbor came and told us what had happened. It had run right past the spot where their children had been playing and into the woods. We never saw it again.
