Exploring Nature, February 2024

by Kevin Shank | Feb 1, 2024 | 0 comments

  • After a snowfall, look for fresh animal tracks to identify.
  • Hunt for shed antlers.
  • Maintain bird feeding stations with seeds and suet treats.
  • In late February or early March, wood frogs and salamanders come out of hibernation and begin laying eggs on warm, wet nights. Watch for red-spotted newts preying on frog eggs.
  • Wildebeest are arriving in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania. This is also their calving season, during which nearly a half million calves are born in two or three weeks.
