  • The elk are still bugling.
  • Brown and brook trout are spawning.
  • Wild ginseng is ready for harvest. Check local laws.
  • Bobwhite Quail live in coveys from autumn to spring.
  • Sometime in October is the peak of leaf color for much of the United States.
  • At Cape May, New Jersey, October is peak for migrating hawks and cormorants. Scoters begin migrating. Gulls, terns, egrets, and herons are also migrating strongly.
  • When all the petals have fallen off purple coneflowers (October), cut and save the heads. Goldfinches will love the seeds.
