A lot of effort went into the birding contest. From the letters that some of you sent, we can tell it was an enjoyable and educational event. Here is a special thank you to those who submitted writings and/or photos. Besides other photos scattered throughout the magazine, the bird photos on both sides of both covers came with birders’ submissions. Also “The Birders’ Trail” was written by a participant. Thank you. We like to support the contest with these extras even though writing a story or sending photos was not required.

Some of you commented on how many birds there are all around us, once we set our minds to thinking about them. Just how many there are still boggles my mind when I think of our son Shaphan. One morning as he sat by a tree hunting gobblers, he saw or heard fifty species from that one spot. Species, mind you, not just different birds. Cheryl and Adrian are also like that—know many birds’ songs.

About six weeks ago, after a successful morning’s hunt when Bethany, Cheryl, and I each got a gobbler, I sent a picture to a friend. His reply was that he was out bird-watching too—for our contest.

One last thing—compiling the results of this contest was a huge undertaking. We caught ourselves adding birds but forgetting to add the birders’ names. We have double-checked the submissions with the participants list, but with a project this large, mistakes are more apt to happen. If we missed you, our apologies.
