I was partway through a quiet dinner at the kitchen table, the shadows getting longer in the yard, when a bit of movement beneath the trees caught my eye. A lone rabbit sat under the leafed-out branches, still and alert, nestled in the clover like he belonged there.

Curious, I reached for my longer lens and stepped quietly out onto the sidewalk. He seemed relaxed, aware of me but unbothered. I watched him, framing a few shot in the golden light of the setting sun, when a flicker of motion near the timber caught my eye…a second rabbit, cautiously hopping into view.

The first one perked up, as if he’d known all along his friend was coming. And then, as if on cue, the stillness in my yard burst into life.

They danced. One charged; the other leapt. Then again, but higher. What began as stillness became play…leapfrogging, dashing, turning midair. Each motion felt joyful, almost rehearsed, like they’d been waiting all day for this moment.

There was a rhythm to it, a playful duet in the blooming clover. I adjusted my shutter to keep up with the action, smiling with each frame I captured.

And just as suddenly as they had started, the two rabbits slowed. A pause, a final glance toward each other… then they turned and disappeared into the trees, leaving behind only the memory of their little performance.

I did not finish my dinner warm, but I wouldn’t trade this unexpected ballet of the bunnies for anything.
